Whisper Is Gone — Where People Went Instead

Whisper raised $60 million and was valued at $200 million. It vanished from both app stores in 2024. Here is what happened, and where its millions of users actually went.

6 min de lecture

For most of the 2010s, Whisper was the anonymous confession app. It raised around $60 million in venture funding, reached a reported $200 million valuation, and gave millions of people a place to post a secret over an image without attaching their name.

Then it quietly disappeared. If you're here because the app stopped working or you couldn't find it in the store, you're not imagining it.

What actually happened

Whisper was removed from the Google Play Store in September 2024 and is no longer listed on the iOS App Store. There was no dramatic shutdown announcement — it simply stopped being available.

The decline had been running for years:

  • In 2014, The Guardian reported that Whisper was tracking users' locations, including some who had opted out, and sharing information with the US Department of Defense. Whisper disputed the reporting and The Guardian later walked parts of it back — but the damage to the anonymity claim was done.
  • In 2017, the company laid off around 20% of its staff.
  • Forbes later reported, based on case files, that the platform had a serious and persistent child-predator problem.
  • By 2024, university systems including the UNC System were banning anonymous apps outright — Whisper among them — citing indifference to bullying and disregard for young users' wellbeing.
Whisper's failure wasn't a technical one. It's the same failure Secret had in 2015: anonymity plus replies plus an audience, with no moderation model strong enough to hold it.

The lesson worth taking from it

Whisper's collapse is genuinely instructive, because the two things that killed it are things you can check for in any replacement.

First, the anonymity was a product claim rather than an architectural fact. Whisper had accounts, stored location data, and retained enough information that its anonymity depended on the company's ongoing goodwill. Any platform where anonymity is a policy rather than a technical property can revoke it — deliberately, or through a breach, or under legal pressure, or after an acquisition.

Second, replies. Every anonymous platform that turned toxic had them. Secret had them and shut down over bullying in 2015. Yik Yak had them and got banned from campuses. The ability to respond directly to an anonymous poster is what converts a confession into a target.

Where people went

Reddit's confession subreddits

The single biggest destination. r/confession, r/offmychest and r/TrueOffMyChest absorbed a large share of Whisper's use case, and they're active around the clock. You get replies and genuine support — which is the appeal, and also the risk. A Reddit account carries post history, which is a well-documented de-anonymization vector. Use a throwaway for anything sensitive.

No-account confession feeds

A number of web-based confession sites require no signup at all, which structurally solves the problem Whisper had: there's no account for a confession to be attached to. saynothing.io is ours — no account, no email, IPs hashed with a secret salt and raw addresses dropped after a short moderation window, state-or-country location only, no replies, no followers, no ads. Others in the category exist and some are decent; check for a signup form and a specific IP-retention statement before trusting any of them.

Peer-support platforms

If what you actually wanted from Whisper was a conversation, services built for peer support — rather than confession feeds — are a better fit. They're moderated, they're designed for a back-and-forth, and they don't pretend a public feed is the same thing as being heard.

What to check before you commit to a replacement

  1. Can you post without creating an account? If not, it isn't anonymous in the way Whisper wasn't anonymous.
  2. Does the privacy policy say specifically what happens to your IP address?
  3. Can strangers reply directly to your post?
  4. Is there any follower count, karma score, or leaderboard?
  5. Is the moderation policy written down anywhere you can read it before posting?

Whisper would have failed at least three of these on the day it launched. That's the whole story.

Questions fréquentes

Why was Whisper removed from the app stores?
Whisper was pulled from the Google Play Store in September 2024 and delisted from the iOS App Store, following years of decline that included reporting on location tracking, significant layoffs in 2017, Forbes coverage of child-safety failures, and bans by university systems citing indifference to bullying.
Is there an app exactly like Whisper?
Not really, and that's arguably a good thing — the anonymous-app-with-replies model has a poor track record, with Whisper, Secret and Yik Yak all shutting down or being banned. Most of Whisper's users moved to Reddit's confession subreddits for replies, or to no-account web confession feeds for genuine anonymity.
Was Whisper ever really anonymous?
Not fully. Whisper required an account and retained location data. In 2014 The Guardian reported it tracked users' locations, including some who had opted out — reporting Whisper disputed and The Guardian later partly retracted. The broader point stands: anonymity backed by company policy rather than by architecture can always be revoked.
What is the safest way to confess something online now?
Use a platform that requires no account at all, so there's no identity for the post to attach to. Avoid naming other people or giving locations specific enough to identify anyone. Prefer platforms without replies if you're concerned about a pile-on, and check the privacy policy for a specific statement about IP retention.
